Amaama to Inazuma Hamburg Steak Video

I have been wanting to try hamburg steak for a long time. I grew up with versions that were similar to meatloaf slathered in brown gravy. Thanks “Southern Food”. Watching anime and Japanese TV you see how popular western food really is and it was intriguing to see how they  take on and change the food for their liking.

Above is my version of Amaama to Inazuma’s Hamburg Steak recipe. Next I move onto details into the cooking process and an episode review!

This anime took a very Italian style approach to hamburg steak. Its tomato sauce for stewing was very cheap and easy to make. If it wasn’t a large meat patty I ate this would’ve been perfect for spaghetti and meatballs instead.

This is the screenshot from the anime, helpfully, showing all the ingredients used in their version. I was also surprised at how simple this really was to make and it shows that simple food is always good food. My version differed only slightly from this one.

Hamburg Steak:

  • 1 cup cooked onion
  • 1/2 lb pork and beef
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 egg

Sauce:

  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 Tbls flour
  • 1/4 cup sake
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 Tbls Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 chicken bouillon cube
  • 1 Tbls tomato paste
  • 1 can diced tomato
  • 3 Tbls garlic
  • 2 bay leaves

vlcsnap-error501I love Kotori’s mother’s descriptions on how to cook. I wish we would see more of these drawings and recipe details as the show went on. I have cut dozen of pounds of onions in the kitchen and there is no better way for dicing then this method shown.

And after boasting about cutting dozens of pounds of onions, this awful action happened to me when I tried to cut one small onion. Small tip – wash the onion after cutting it the first time to wash away extra sulfuric acid which causes those dreaded tears. I first saw this scene and laughed thinking it was overkill donning protective gear but soon was out in the garage looking for googles.

Unlike Tsumugi in this episode, I cried tears of joy that cooking was finally over. I started cooking too late at night and by 1 am dinner was ready and so was I for bed though. The meal was very tasty given that it was served with rice when I would traditionally prefer pasta with Italian food. Kotori commented that the mixed up yolk is the tastiest part of this dish and I would’ve like to enjoy the creaminess the yolk would’ve added to the sauce.
